I will be sharing with you 14 characteristics of the Border Collie, the most intelligent dog in the world.
The most intelligent dogs in the world.
The first characteristic, as we've already said, Border Collie is considered one of the most intelligent dogs in the world. It's a good herding dog and it's traditionally known for it.
This dog perfectly knows its environment so if for example the pack is missing a member, it can notify its owner or the head of the pack that something is happening. That's why it's considered the most intelligent dog in the world.
Restless.
As we said, it's a herding dog. It has a lot of energy and is wonderful around people. But it's also very restless dog and we must know how to administer or manage this energy. Border Collie has to exercise a lot, if not you will see that it will not stand still the whole day.
Sociable.
It's a very sociable dog. If you want to enlarge your family, Border Collie is the perfect dog for it. Also if you have children, they will get together and play without any problem. Besides if you have another dog, they will also get together well, because it's very sociable, friendly and affectionate dog.
Can identify more than 50 objects.
This dogs are so intelligent that they can identify more than 50 objects or at least we can teach them to. What do I mean by it? If you show them a plate and say plate, they knows what objects you mean. Same with sofa or other object. They even been able to teach a Border Collie to count. How they did it? They held fingers like this and like this and Border Collie barked two times, counting that there are two fingers.
Very Active.
As I told you, they are very active, so if you love to exercise, Border Collie will accompany you everywhere. As a curiosity, I will tell you that the first time we took Kimba to the mountains, and it was quite a rocky and steep mountain, she had no problem climbing to the top. You will see, that this dog can accompany you to many places.
Physical trait that is its coat.
Border Collie is known for its long, soft and silky hair. The most common is the black and white Border Collie, but as you can see there are other varieties. There is also merle Border Collie, the one with different colors spots. Kimba is a lilac merle Border Collie. Which means that she has a light brown color with spots.
Not very big.
Next physical feature is that Border Collies are not very big. Kimba is still a puppy, she’s 8 months old but you can see that her height is average. When they reach adulthood, they can weight between 16 and 23 kilos. Their important characteristic is that they don’t have tendencies to be obese. They are so active and they discharge so much energy that they don’t usually have this kind of problem.
Physiognomy.
As you can see it’s a very elegant dog. Border Collie has sturdy trunk, long neck and thin, and at the same time, very strong legs. I’ll tell you a little anecdote, because Kimba is still a puppy, which means she’s still growing. One day we went for a walk and play, she fell to the ground, hit a stone and her bone broke in two.
When they are adult, it’s true that they have very strong bones but when they are growing up, they are fragile and you need to be careful. Because she is a puppy she cured without any problem, she didn’t even need a surgery. But keep in mind that you have to be careful when they are young.
Life expectancy.
How long does a Border Collie live? Usually between 12 and 15 years, so we can say that it's a long-lived dog.
Not many health problems.
They don't usually present many health problems but when they reach adulthood they can develop bone and joint problems or hip problems. These are the most common health problems.
Education.
It’s not easy to educate a Border Collie. If you have a Border Collie we encourage you to leave a comment was it easy or not to educate your dog. Border Collie is a very intelligent dog and it works very well with positive reinforcement. So if you want to train it, always do it with positive reinforcement. It will keep the dog focused and enable learning. Another very important thing is that Border Collie love to play. So play can be used as a positive reinforcement to help them learn faster.
Agility.
If you have a Border Collie at home there is no way to tire it out just by running or exercising together. It’s not easy to make it calm. What can we do? We can make it to practice agility. Agility is very good for them, it requires a lot of energy and also Border Collies are good at it. Border Collies are very agile. When Kimba was little, she could already climb to more or less this height, easily. And she’s not even 8 months old. This exercise is very good for them and we encourage you to try it.
Their character.
Border Collies are very affectionate dogs, very sociable, as I've said before, you're not going to have any problem with them. You should know that they are usually quite suspicious of strangers. I always like to tell an anecdote about something that happened to us to show you how suspicious they can get.
When Kimba sees someone and for whatever reason, she senses that something is wrong, even though she's not aggressive and doesn't usually bark, when she detects something that she doesn't like, she warns us. She starts to bark and tells us that for some reason she doesn't like that person. So they can also be wonderful dogs to guard your house.
Energy.
What can we do with negative behaviors? Can a Border Collie misbehave? Yes, like all dogs, it can have some behavior or behaviors that we don't like. But it's mostly caused by its enormous energy. If it doesn't do enough sport or we leave it in a closed space, what it's going to do is destroying everything because it has a lot, a lot of energy and has to release it somewhere.
It's like a bomb of mass destruction, that must be controlled. And if you can't control it, Border Collie is not the dog for you. Remember that they can count and they know if anyone is missing from their herd. It turns out that they can also interpret facial expressions and understand what you want to say to them with gestures. This characteristic makes them very special.
They are so intelligent, so disciplined, and with so much energy that they are typically chosen by firefighting teams for rescue missions. You've probably seen them many times, news about earthquakes and victims trapped under buildings, that need to be found. Border Collie is so disciplined and has so big a desire to work, that it's the right dog to help these teams.
